could not re-orthogonalise all Lanczos vectors

Post by mel »

I am trying to model a sub-assemblage of a composite structure. When running an eigenvalue analysis I get this response:

Warning: could not re-orthogonalise all Lanczos vectors.

What does this mean? and how can I fix this?

This message means that the Lanczos algorithm, which currently serves as the eigenvalue engine of SesimoStruct, could not calculate all or some of the vibration modes of the structure.

This behaviour may be observed in either (i) models with assemblage errors (e.g. unconnected nodes/elements) or (ii) complex structural models that feature links/hinges etc.

If you have checked carefully your model and found no modelling errors, you can perhaps try to "simplify" it, by removing its more complex features until you do obtain the eigenvalue solutions. This will enable you to gain a better understanding of what might be causing the analysis problems, and thus assist you in deciding on how to proceed.
