Nodes detached from structure

Post by rgduarte »

Hi

I'm modeling a 3-story benchmark structure with a dynamic Time--history analysis.
Yet when i plot the deformed shape, the nodes seem to be detached from the end and beginning of the elements. The results, such as acceleration and displacement don't match the benchmark.
How can i "fix" the nodes to the end and beginning of each element ? Besides that the structure "moves" sideways although the bottom nodes are completely fixed ! (Seismic analysis (NLTH), with acceleration Load on those bottom nodes)

To make it more clear, here is a plot of the post-processor:

Thank you for your help.

Hi rgduarte,

The deformed shape is strange indeed. Some suggestions:
1) Have you tried to close and re-open the program?
2) Are you using link elements at the supports, in order to model flexible support conditions? There is a bug in the display of link elements in v6 and v6.5 (thr bug is fixed in the upcoming v7 release).

Thank you for yout answer.

Yes, i've tried several times re-opening the program and i even made a structure from the beginning.

I'm using S345 and S248 steel grades, element classe: elfrm on the columns and beams, and i'm not using any type of element class besides the elfrm (no link and no mass elements). Plus, i'm making a 2D analysis, restraining the nodes on x, ry and rz since my structure is in the ZY plane. (The bottom nodes are fixed on all DOF). I'm using a dynamic Time-history analysis with the Northridge accelerogram (time step of 0,06 - Total of 1000 steps).

When i use the deformation amplifier the "difference" between the nodes and the elements is more clear.
Besides that , the results that i get from the post-processor don't match the results on the benchmark article. And my guess is that since the results that i need ( acceleration, velocity, base shear, displacement) are given by the nodes, i'm not able to get the correct/Benchmark values.

Thank you, once again.

Can you please send us the *.spf file via e-mail. There is something strange going on that we cannot understand.

Thank you,

Dear rgduarte,

Thank you for the file and your contribution in fixing a SeismoStruct bug. The bug will appear fixed in the upcoming v7 release, and it is related entirely to the display of the 3d plot of the structure, i.e. it does not affect the structural results whatsoever.

For the time being, note that in v6.5 if you release the out-of-plane supports (x+ry+rz) of the upper storey nodes, the visualisation problem will be fixed.
