Circular hollow section problem

Post by flopez »

Hi,

I am using a circular hollow section. In the definition of the section the program asks for internal and external DIAMETERS.

However, when looking at the graphocal interfase, the plotted cross section is twice the input diameters. Aparently, the program is mixing diameter and radius definitions.

Question is: what do the program use for the actual calculations, diameter or radius of the hollow section? Is it only a graphic error?

Thanks

Further to my previous question, I perform a quick static analysis to determine the vertical reaction (weight) of a reinforced circular hollow section.

The results from the program do not correspond to the hand calcs. The same problem was found with reinforced rectangular hollow sections.

I also tested the reinforced concrete circular and rectangular section (not hollow) and the reactions found by the program correspond vey well to hand calcs.

Any thoughts guys?

Thanks

Hello,
This problem still exists with SeismoStruct 5.0.5 Build 10. Circular hollow sections are plotted twice the size of the section in the 3D window. I compared cantilever bending and axial tension on CHS with hand calculations and results using desired diameter values in section definition lead to similar results in elastic range with both methods. In addition, the EA and EI values seem to be inline with hand calculations. However, in 3D when I define a node that is diameter (section definition) away from the section center node, it is coincident with the CHS wall (should be one radius over the edge of the tube).

Can you reproduce this behavior?
Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Yes, you are right, there is indeed a small bug with the 3D rendering of 'css' and 'chs' sections, which we will be correcting in the next release of the software. (as you mention, it does not affect the results though)

Thank you for (re-)bringing this matter to our attention,
