damping and isolators

Post by marco »

1)in project settings-> damping ratio-> 5% ? i must insert 0.05 or 5?
2)can i use seismostruct for base isolation?

1) 5 (note that you can always run a simple test (e.g. SDOF system subjected to impulse load) to clarify doubts of this sort)
2) of course you can (read the Help System, in particular the chapter on Link Elements)

I have a problem when using the link modelling to model base isolation .
The program asks about the six degrees of freedom (F1,F2,F3,M1,M2,M3). In my case I put the values of the stiffness of F1,M1,M2,M3 and used the linear symmetric type, and I used the bilinear kinematic type in case of F3,F2.
I want damping 10 for F1,M1,M2,M3 and damping none for F3,F2…..how I do? Thank you

Dear Marco,

We cannot really understand why you wish to assign a 10% damping to the "non-active" DOFs of the base-isolation link element.
In any case, we can confirm that it is not possible to assign different damping values to each DOF of a link element; if you really need to do such a thing, the you may try to employ two different link elements, in series.
