Unable to apply the entire phase load

Post by abbas62 »

I modeled a 3D structur in 12 story. I have a problem with running Static pushover analysis and every time the processor starts after a few seconds it stops and show this message. Please help me. I send my model to Seismosoft.

Disp_Incr= 0.00008, LF= (Iter: 40 => Max_Ite)
Disp_Incr= 0.00004, LF= (Iter: 40 => Max_Ite)

Dear abbas62,

If you carry out a search in this Forum on "unable to apply" you will find numerous posts with plenty of hints on this issue.

In the case of you particular model, if you relax your displacement/rotation convergence criteria from 1E-5 to 1E-4, the analysis should run until the end.

Dear tmfgoag,

As stated above, the suggested change in convergence criterion applied to the specific model of abbas62.

In your case, we suggest you to experiment with the many other suggestions found in the Forum, and on the Help System (in particular the Notes found on many of its pages).

Dear tmfgoag,

We looked into your model, and actually managed to make it run until a top displacement of 0.25 metres was reached, hence well beyond the initial loads application at which your analysis was stopping.

We achieved this by tweaking parameters such as rotation convergence tolerance (1e-4), element loop convergence criterion (1e-4), element loop maximum iterations (1000), number of steps (100), no diaphragm constraints.

We did not check if the halting of the analysis at a displacement of 0.25 m is due to numerical difficulties or rather due to actual structural failure; you will need to do this. We note also that there are other aspects of your model (e.g. beams are not subdivided, but you have distributed self-weight), that would require attention.

Finally, we recall that as stated in many other posts in this Forum, it is very difficult to adequately "debug" a model that is as large as the one you sent us, and features complications such as diaphragm constraints. You really should be following the recommendations found on all sorts of posts here, regarding convergence difficulties, together with the suggestions in http://www.seismosoft.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=287.

dear seismostruct developer,

thank you very much for the reply and advice. my supervisors already solve the problem why my model is stopping (for pushover analysis). many thanks again.

Dear tmfgoag,

We are glad to hear that you have overcome your difficulties.

For the benefit of other users who visit this Discussion Forum in search for assistance and guidance, like you did, it would be very useful if you could let us know what changes were introduced to make the model run.
