FRP CONFINED CONCRETE

Post by Mohamed_Rabie »

Dear Sir/Madam,

Greetings,

Could you please tell me how Seismostruct considers the effect of FRP confinement on both core and cover concrete in column?
The confinement factor for both core and cover concrete are determined automatically by Seismostruct when the user defines the stirrup details and FRP details in the software. Please, what models are used to determine the confinement factor?

Thanks and best regards,

Dear Mohamed_Rabie,

The equations of Annex A of EN1998-3 have been employed for the calculation of the contribution of the FRP jacket to the section's confinement factor. Please refer to the Eurocode 8- Part 3 for more information.

Dear Zoi Gronti,

Isn't it based on Ferracuti and Savoia (2005) model? It is reported in some papers (including your paper" Pushover Analyses of Two-Span Reinforced Concrete Bridge With Piers Confined by Fiber Reinforcements") that it is based on Ferracuti and Savoia (2005) model.
How about for columns confined with steel reinforced polymer?

Thanks and regards

Dear Tdwa,

As it is written in SeismoStruct's User Manual, the confinement factor, although it may be computed through the use of any confinement model available in the literature [e.g. Ahmad and Shah, 1982; Sheikh and Uzumeri, 1982; Eurocode 8, 2004; Penelis and Kappos, 1997], the Mander et al. [1989] is used by the program both in the Sections and in the Confinement Factor Calculation module.

You are able to compute the confinement factor of a section by using any model that you want to and assign the value of the confinement factor manually.

To clarify my previous post, the equations of Annex A of EN1998-3 have been employed for the calculation of the confinement pressure taking into account the contribution of the FRP jacket. The confinement factor is calculated according to Mander et al. [1989] with the value of the confinement pressure calculated according to the equations of Annex A of EN1998-3.
