Shear Capacity Reached

Post by Vinga@123 »

Hi,
Could I please know the difference between "shear capacity reached" and "shear reached" in the pushover analyis?

Thank you.

I am not certain about the question. But if this is a performance criteria issue, it seems that the "shear capacity" notification applies when the user specifies shear capacity calculations by a selected specification. The "shear reached" notification would evidently apply when the user selected a user-input shear value as a performance criterion.

Thank you huffte for your reply. Yes I was talking about the performance criteria issue. So when I apply the user selected shear as a performance criteria, it again asks to select an equation. Let's say I select Eurocode in both cases (under code-based capacity checks and under performance criteria), I get the two notifications in two different times, two different shear force capacities. How can those two values be different if they are calculated according to Eurocode? What are the actual meanings of those two terms. It is really confusing, and would be much obliged if you can give me some insights.

Dear Vinga@123,

As it is written in SeismoStruct's User Manual: "Further, it is also feasible to monitor the shear values of frame elements, with the definition of one or more shear threshold values. Finally, chord rotation yielding, chord rotation capacity and element shear capacity checks for frame elements can be introduced, whereby the program automatically calculates the capacity of the elements during the analysis, according to the selected equation of the available Codes (Eurocodes, ASCE 41-17, NTC-18, NTC-08, KANEPE and TBDY), and checks it against the corresponding demand.".

Hence, the one refers to the shear value of the frame elements and the other to the shear capacity of the frame elements that is calculated according to the selected Code.
