150% of Target Displacement

Post by Kirkaguel »

The ASCE 41 code requires that the analysis should be carried out at least 150% of the target displacement for the reason that the seismic hazard selected may be exceeded in the actual eathquake event and the structure may experience some strength and stiiffness degradation which may result in dynamic instability. (Which is also the reason I asked in my separate post about the pushover curve graph showing the post peak stiffness and strength degradation.)

I run the sample 10 Story RC building and check the target displacement at Collapse prevention level the program terminates the displacement at 0.30m which is not even 150% of the target displacement at collapse prevention level. See attached image.

Is there a way that way can increase the cut off displacement done by the program to go beyond 150%?

You can increase the Maximum Interstorey Drift from the default 2% to a larger value (Code Requirements>Analysis Type - Lateral Load Profile)
