Modelling of Steel Columns in Building Modeler + Structure Self-Weight

Post by JRCM »

Hello, new user here!

I am trying to perform a static pushover analysis on a 5-story building with steel columns (W-sections). Does the building modeller have this functionality?

Follow-up question, does Seismostruc automatically calculate the self-weight of the elements present in the building (even without using the building modeller tool)? If so, where can I find this information? Thank you.

Dear JRCM,

W steel sections are available in SeismoStruct, as detailed in the SeismoStruct Help System: https://help.seismosoft.com/seismostruc ... /index.htm.
The self-weight is automatically calculated based on the specific weight of the material and the selections made within the Gravity & Mass tab of the project settings: https://help.seismosoft.com/seismostruc ... y_mass.htm.

Dear JRCM,

Just to clarify that the steel sections are not available within the Building Modeller facility (with the exception of Steel braces), but are accessible within the main program of SeismoStruct.

Dear Z.gronti,

I have a few follow-up questions:

1. Is there a way to set the self-weight of slabs outside the building modeller facility? From what I know so far, slabs are modelled as rigid diaphragms in this software. However, I can't seem to find where I can change the self-weight properties of rigid diaphragms.

2. On the topic of self-weight, where can I view the value of the total self-weight that Seismostruct has calculated?

Dear JRCM,

1. You should calculate the slab load and assign it to the proper supporting beam.
2. Please check the following forum topic
