linear asymetric link or Gap hook

Hi everyone,
I am struggling to understand the behaviour of linear asymmetric link. I am trying to model a tension only member by using linear asymmetric link and to run dynamic time history analysis. But it seems the asymmetric link element is acting like a linear symmetric link and the member takes both tension and compression. However the gap elements work in this case.
Can anyone explain when I need to use gap element and when I should use linear asymmetric element.
