Shear governing failure

Hi,
I want to run pushover analysis in transverse direction of a wall pier that is supposed to be failed in shear because of having very low aspect ratio. Is it anyhow possible to capture the shear dominating failure of the wall pier in Seismostrut. Is any link element available to model such behavior.

thank you

Hi newaj88.

I recommend a few things to help you find the answer as to whether or not SeismoStruct will meet your needs:

1. Examine and run Verification Problem Ch4-RC-02.spf which comes with the installation. This is a 7-storey shear wall building.

2. Examine and run the infill wall Verification Problems, Ch4-Infill-01,02,03, and 04.spf. Also look over the infill strut element class in the Help System. Although it sounds as though you aren't really modeling an infill, the information may prove helpful.

3. Do a forum search on "shear deformation" and in particular, look over the valuable information already discussed in the forum at:

Best of luck newaj88.

Hi newaj88,

I'll quickly complement huffte's (typically) very good response by noting that:

- if you wish to model shear deformation, you will indeed need to introduce a link element with an appropriately selected and calibrated response curve (search the literature/web for guidance)

- if you wish instead to simply check the attainment of maximum shear capacity of your structural elements, you may use the Performance Criteria module
