Infill interaction with column

Post by Abbas Mirfattah »

Hi
I understand that the masonry infill panels are simulated via 3 structs in each direction (2 for diagonal actions and 1 for shear).
One end of the diagonal struts are connected to the corner of panel while the other ends are connected to the columns near the corner (eccentrically)
That is to simulate the width of the diagonal struct that will form.
My question is that does this system capture the excessive shear force that is imposed from masonry infill to the column?
in other words if the infill interaction with the columns causes shear failure, does the program sees it as code based failure?

Thanks

No, the infill element cannot simulate such localised effects. The infill element is a macroelement. The 6 struts are employed for a better representation of the force-deformation behaviour of the panel internally, but ultimately the internal forces act on the 4 corner nodes of the infill and are transfered to the edges of the adjacent frame elements.
