Scale factor values

Post by edemqs »

Goodnight,
I have a question about the scale factor parameter for the algorithm proposed by Hancock et al. I read that this parameter can be modified to obtain a better coincidence with the target spectrum. However, I would like to know what criteria are used to modify this parameter. I hope you can help me. Thank you very much in advance, regards from Perú :)

You can apply any scale factor you desire. And you can be very simplistic or very rigorous in determining a scale factor. There are many options. Among them are:

1. Look at the target spectrum and the unscaled ground motion response spectrum and visually estimate a scale factor.
2. Scale the ground motion such that the response spectrum of the scaled record exactly matches the target response spectrum at a particular, single period.
3. Compute a scale factor which minimizes mean-square-error (MSE) over a desired period range. Scale factor calculation can be accomplished using SeismoSelect, also available from SeismoSoft.

I would say that 3 is the preferred method.
