time history analysis using accelerograms from any duration

Post by hendrasusilo17 »

hi,
how do we do time history analysis using accelerograms from any duration type?
are we cut the real accelerograms appropriate any duration type, then analysis it?

Can you please explain what do you mean? I am not sure that I can understand the meaning of your question.

There is four strong motion duration type according to SeismoSignal in Ground Motion Parameters Tab
Uniform duration, Bracketed duration, Significant duration, and Effective duration.
How do we use these in dynamic structure responses analysis?
what do strong motion duration describes?

Hi hendrasusilo17,

The different duration parameters that you mention were not necessarily developed for the purpose of truncating accelerograms to use in nonlinear dynamic analysis.

Indeed, as you will readily gather from a quick read of some of the papers in which such duration parameters are proposed, the main motivation behind their introduction is that of facilitating the understanding of the characteristics of different records, of the earthquakes that generated them, and of their potential impact on structures (e.g. short duration records tend to be generated by relatively shallow non-subdunction earthquakes and are likely to damage degrading structures less than their long duration counterparts).

For accelerogram truncation purposes, you may e.g. decide to use only the part of the record corresponding to a variation of the Arias Intensity from 5% to 95%. Whilst this would mean that the duration of your truncated record would be the (5-95%) Signifcant Duration of the original record, you would not really be using such duration parameter to truncate the record, but you would rather be using Arias Intensity thresholds to truncate the record, colaterally ending up with a duration that corresponds to a duration parameter that is commonly employed to characterise records.

Hope the above helps,

Rui
