Pinching behaviour

Post by brisidi »

I have two suggestions for future developments:

1) In my opinion, you could add a nonlinear element that accounts for a pinched force - deformation relationship. I would imagine it being something like the Pinching4 material that OpenSees has: http://peer.berkeley.edu/publications/p ... 3/0310.pdf

2) you could add some sort of graphical representation of development of plastic hinges, or damage/limit states.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your suggestions that we will definitely consider in future versions of SeismoStruct.
Note however that in SeismoStruct 2016 there is indeed graphical display of the damage and the reach of the limit states (both with colour and with textures of damaged material) in the deformed shape viewer. See the code-based checks and the performance criteria definition for further details.

Dear Seismosoft team,

The addition of a robust hysteretic model like the Ibarra Krawinkler or Pinching 4 will really widen the frontiers of Seismostruct abilites such as;
1. Simulating the response of a structure from elastic response to dynamic instability for collapse assessment (e.g. application of Fema p695 methodology for characterizing system response parameters such as R-factor);
2. Estimating economic losses for a structure from minor damages to near-collapse stages;
3. Modeling structural elements with strength & stiffness degradation (beam-column joints).
4. Additionally, the seismic performance of non-structural elements is getting an increased attention in the recent times due to the severe economic losses because of their damage. The force-deformation behavior of typical non-structural elements is usually pinched and has strength and stiffness degradation. Tests are conducted on generic non-structural elements layout and in order to develop tools for performance-based earthquake engineering applications, such as fragility curves for loss estimation, analytical studies need to be conducted - which again requires robust hysteretic models (to be calibrated with experimental results).

The addition of a robust hysteretic model will be a significant step-forward in the development of seismostruct keeping in mind the need for such a hysteretic model as illustrated by the few examples I mentioned above.

Wish you all the best.

Best regards,
Rashid

Thank you for your suggestion. We will include the three modified Ibarra-Medina-Krawinkler models in the upcoming version of SeismoStruct (v2018).
